Your trusted companion for road trip adventures worldwide
WheelsAbroad was born from a simple belief: the best way to truly experience a destination is from behind the wheel. Founded in 2015 by travel enthusiast Alex Mitchell, our platform has grown from a personal blog into a comprehensive resource for independent travelers seeking authentic road trip experiences.
We understand that planning a road trip in unfamiliar territory can be daunting. That's why we've created detailed guides, practical tips, and inspiring content to help you navigate with confidence, whether you're cruising along California's Pacific Coast Highway or exploring the remote highlands of Scotland.
Founder, Travel Writer & Road Trip Enthusiast
My journey began with a beat-up VW van and a dream to see the world differently. After quitting my corporate job in 2010, I embarked on what was supposed to be a three-month road trip across America. That trip turned into a lifestyle, and over the past 15 years, I've driven through more than 50 countries, covering over 100,000 miles of the world's most spectacular roads.
From navigating the hairpin turns of Norway's Atlantic Road to camping under the stars in the Australian Outback, each journey has taught me something new about the art of road travel. I've learned that the best experiences often come from the unexpected detours, the local recommendations, and the willingness to take the road less traveled.
